The purpose of this presentation is to introduce you to creating your own web site using Apple's iWeb. We will do so by conducting a hands-on demonstration of how to go about this.
I. Design
- Choosing a Template
- Have all your resources ready to go: text, photos, audio, video, widgets - whatever!
- Use pencil and paper - that's right, pencil and paper - to sketch your basic design
- Open iWeb.
- Select File - New Site.
- From the drop-down menu below "Choose a template for you web page", select All to view the complete list.
- Using the same drop-down menu, select and view each of the Theme categories. What do the Theme category numbers 1.0 through 3.0 refer to?
- Discussion: For what sort of web sites are the templates suitable? What is the target audience? Do you think the templates can be adapted to other uses?
- Examples of non-iWeb types of designs:
- To begin the web site design process, choose a template that best meets your goals.
- After choosing the template for the Welcome page, publish the site, such as it is, to a local folder.
- Use Finder to find the local folder. Note the index.html file in the local folder.
- Adding Content to the Home Page
- The four regions of the webpage (navigation bar, header, body, footer)
- In the menu at the bottom of the screen, right side, select Show Media.
- Browse each of the four forms of media (Audio, Photos, Movies, Widgets) to see what is available to you on your computer for designing your web site.
- How to add photos
- How to add text
- How to add links
.

- the menu system - Site structure and the side bar
- renaming pages
- the menu system - web page menus
.

.
IV. Manage and Publish
- No need to rename the home page index.html
- using iWeb's ftp programme
- using FileZilla to upload your web site:
- Open FileZilla.
- In the Local site box browse through your computer directory until you find the folder to which you saved your web pages.
- Open the folder by clicking on it. The files appear in the frame below.
- Open the Site manager (first icon on the left in the menu bar).
- Select New Site and give it a name. Enter the appropriate settings: Host: the ftp address given to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP); Severtype: FTP - File Transfer Protocol; Logontype: usually this should be set to "Normal"; User: the name you selected or given you by your ISP; Password: as selected by you.
- Select Connect. The Remote Site directory will appear after FileZilla has made the connection.
- Select the files you wish to upload: right-click or Control-click and select "Upload" from the pop-up menu.
- Check the results with your web browser.
